Is consolidating your credit card debt a scam?

We consolidated our debt several years ago, thinking it was the answer to our problems. We found out later that it looks really bad on your credit report and, in fact, most lenders/creditors will treat it equally as a BANKRUPTCY. I was told by a lender to never do consolidation if you plan on using your credit for any reason in the near future.
