Physics (Particle or astrophysics, both with cosmology) or Nuclear / Mechanical / Aeronautical engineering?

If you love physics, particle, astro, and cosmo are the way to go. But it is a long road ahead in grad school, post doc, and trying to get tenure and does not pay nearly as well as most forms of engineering.
